Fall 🍁 Sewing Projects + My Easiest Sewing Room Storage Hack

Greetings friends!

I hope this week's edition finds you doing well! August is slipping away and I'm trying to make the most of it.

Here's a look behind the curtain at what's been going on in my sewing room this month. Not a ton of sewing, but some. There has also been a ton of PURGING going on and that has felt great!

Also I finally finished a 3-year-old WIP (Work in Progress). And that feels great too!

45 Favorite Fall Sewing Project Ideas

It's been a hot month which makes it hard to believe that Fall is really around the corner. But this week a school bus drove past my house and the kids went back to school, so it looks like it's actually coming!

And I'm not sad about it. Fall is my favorite season.

So with the impending arrival of Autumn, I've updated my list of favorite Fall-inspired Quilts and projects. Now is the perfect time to start (or maybe finish?) a fall project to enjoy during the upcoming season.

One of my best and simplest storage tips ever

A few years ago I stumbled upon a really simple solution for organizing my sewing room.

SEVEN years later, this solution is still working flawlessly. And it's SO easy even a really non-handy person like me can do it in minutes.

Building a Quilt-y Business

Over the years I occasionally get questions or teach workshops about building a quilt-y or creative business. I've started a new weekly email geared toward that topic specifically that comes out every Tuesday. If you're interested in learning how to build a creative business, you can sign up for those emails here.

Also, Elizabeth Chappell is kicking off her annual Quilt Pattern Writing Course with a free workshop in September.

I'm late getting this out today. It's been a busy day working in the yard, catching up on life at home after being at a retreat week of adult-education classes and workshops at a nearby university. It's something I look forward to every August, but by the end my brain is a little fried and I've got lots to catch up online and at home. Still, 100% worth it!

This is a big week at our house and I've been doing tons of yard and house work as we're working to get ready for a lot of family and friends coming over next weekend. This week our youngest son is getting home after being away for 2 years on a volunteer mission experience in North Carolina. To say I'm excited is a vast understatement. 🥹

As I mentioned in my latest post about cleaning out my sewing room, I've been in major clean out mode for, not just my sewing room, but the whole house for the past few weeks. I don't always feel super motivated to clean out closets and drawers, so when I DO feel the motivation I run with it. I've made multiple runs to thrift store donation centers, had friends over to come take fabric I don't need, etc. I've been so driven!

Last week I was talking with a friend whose son is also coming home from a similar experience this week and she mentioned she was cleaning out her basement.

And then it hit me I'm in full on "nesting mode" like I would get right before I had a baby! I asked her if she felt the same and she said, "YES! That is absolutely what I feel like I'm doing!"

Hahah! It was such a funny realization for both of us. And I'm totally okay with that motivation! I'm as anxious to see this kid as I was 20 years ago before he was born!

So, life is full and busy with happy things. Not a lot of it is sewing at the moment, but cooler temperatures are coming and there will be more time with my sewing machine soon enough.
